What is ozempic and how does it work for weight loss?

It’s important to note that Ozempic is a pharmaceutical drug and while it’s beneficial to help you start your weight loss journey, lifestyle intervention — including sustainable and healthy lifestyle changes — is needed to ensure the weight stays off once you stop taking the drug[1].

Ozempic is a once-weekly injectable medication formulated to help adults with type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar. Although not officially a weight loss drug, research suggests that people who take Ozempic may lose modest amounts of weight while on the medication. In fact, the active ingredient in Ozempic, known as semaglutide, is FDA-approved at higher doses for treating individuals living with obesity and other weight related medical problems under the name Wegovy[2].

Ozempic® is an antidiabetic medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. And although the medication is not approved for weight management by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), many have turned to Ozempic® to help manage their weight loss efforts[3].

Clinical studies and effectiveness of ozempic for weight loss.

While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved Ozempic for weight loss, studies have shown it is effective at helping people lose weight. Semaglutide, Ozempic’s active ingredient, has been shown to help a person lose about 15% of their body weight, according to Novo Nordisk’s research published in The Lancet. When people take Ozempic to treat Type 2 diabetes, weight loss is one of its side effects[4].

The benefits of taking Ozempic for weight loss in people who are overweight or obese include lowering risk factors for Type 2 diabetes, improving insulin resistance and normalizing blood sugar levels. Some people may have difficulty losing weight with diet and exercise alone, and Ozempic may help these people reach their weight loss goals[4].

In clinical trials of Ozempic for people with type 2 diabetes, many people lost weight while using the drug together with counseling for lifestyle, habit, and diet changes. However, these trials did not specifically evaluate Ozempic as a weight loss medication[5].

Potential side effects and precautions to consider before taking ozempic for weight loss.

Before your doctor prescribes Ozempic off-label for weight loss, there’s some important information to keep in mind. The drug may not be a safe option for you if you have certain medical conditions or other factors that affect your health. Some of these are mentioned below[5].

If the benefits of losing weight outweigh the health risks of Ozempic, you may want to ask your doctor if taking Ozempic is right for you. Ozempic isn’t approved for weight loss in people without Type 2 diabetes, but doctors can prescribe it off label for this use if you qualify to take it[4].

Note: In addition to being prescribed off-label for weight loss, Ozempic is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for certain uses. Keep in mind that the drug’s dosage may differ with these approved uses. To learn more, talk with your doctor[5].
